Have you seen the news? Your idyllic European vacation may now be getting a little crowded. Europe is experiencing record-high summer tourism, so much that European residents and industry employees are even beginning to push back on the 1.5 billion international tourists breezing through the continent each year. This summer alone, there have been airline strikes and protests in response to the growing travel squeeze, potentially interrupting routes and delaying plans for anyone booking a trip. Not to mention, airfare and hotel prices have gone way up due to the high demand.
Fortunately, our not-so-humble North American continent offers scenic alternatives for travelers hoping to avoid costly international airfares and crowded cities without skimping on the breathtaking views and vibes. A huge number of beautiful destinations exist right in our backyards, and Americans plan to enjoy them this year especially. According to a survey of summer travel conducted by immersive tour company Intrepid Travel, the majority of Americans with plans to travel this summer expect to stay within the U.S. In addition, 74% said they're opting for "summer swap" destinations as a creative way to make travel happen on a lower budget.
If that's you too, check out these North American destination dupes that offer a taste of Europe. Stop in for a quick bite during a road trip, or book a room for a more memorable multi-night stay.
