Cross Creek Golf Club (951/505-3402; crosscreekgolfclub.com) is described by its legendary course designer, Arthur Hills, as "an absolutely beautiful site with plenty of variety and challenge for golfers of all abilities." The course is a recipient of 4 1/2 stars in [italics>>> Golf Digest's "Places to Play" guide. Amazingly just 5 minutes uphill from Downtown Old Town Temecula - pristine golf is played in a secluded, natural environment where groves of age-old oak and sycamore trees, and rippling creeks provide intriguing scenery. The first five holes border Sycamore Creek, bringing water into play early. The demanding par 4 Hole 9 has a large pond to the left of the green, and can decide many front 9 wagers.  The signature 17th hole is a spectacular downhill par 3 that crosses Sycamore Creek to an elevated green. 18 holes; 6,853 yards; par 72. The Legends Golf Club (formerly Temeku Hills; 951/694-9998; thelegendsgc.com), a Ted Robinson design, was opened in 1995 to rave reviews and since freshly updated by P. Dye. The Golf Club at Rancho California (formerly The SCGA Golf Club, 951/677-7446; scgamembersclub.com) was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., and features hilly terrain, wide fairways, strategic bunkering, and large landing areas. With a championship layout that was voted to several "Best Public Course" lists and is known as one of the finest competitive venues in golf, it has been the host to SCGA Championships and qualifying events for USGA, SCGA, and PGA tournaments. 18 holes; 7,036 yards from the longest tees; par 72. Pala Mesa Resort Golf Course (760/731-6803; palamesa.com) was initially designed by William H. Johnson then redesigned by Ted Robinson Sr., and boasts a 4-star rating in [italics>>> Golf Digest's "Places to Play" guide. The championship course is accented with towering oaks, sycamores, and elms lining most fairways, mountain views as a backdrop, and challenges at every turn. The front nine starts on traditional pakland; the back nine climbs into the foothills. 18 holes; 6,502 yards from the longest tees; par 72. Pro shop, driving range, pro lessons, Aquaterra restaurant and lounge.

Golfers of all abilities enjoy a great learning experience with  Temecula Valley Golf School (800/996-2283; temeculavalleygolfschool.com). Conducted at Journey at Pechanga (considered one of California's finest golf courses), instruction is both at the range and on-course. Two to 5 day golf school with 1-to-1 and 2-to-1 student-teacher ratio is available as well as private package lessons that include use of a digital video system. Each day of the golf school includes 3 hours of instruction and video on the range and short game area, plus 9-hole playing lesson.
